Whinneybanks Primary School

Computing

At Whinney Banks Primary, we teach computing following The National Curriculum aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • can understand and apply the fundamental principles and concepts of computer science, including abstraction, logic, algorithms and data representation.
  • can analyse problems in computational terms, and have repeated practical experience of writing computer programs in order to solve such problems.
  • can evaluate and apply information technology, including new or unfamiliar technologies, analytically to solve problems.
  • are responsible, competent, confident and creative users of information and communication technology.

The teaching of Computing at Whinney Banks Primary is divided into three strands: Computer Science (Coding/Media), Information Technology (Parts of a computer and use of hardware), Digital Literacy (Online Safety)

We use Purple Mash resources to teach Coding across school through a comprehensive scheme of work which allows children to progress through units aligned to the National Curriculum. It allows flexibility to meet individual needs and also provides ‘crash course’ units to close gaps in learning.

Online Safety is taught across school through 8 units:

Autumn: Self-image and Identity, Online Relationships, Online Reputation and Online Bullying.

Spring: Managing Online Information and Health, Wellbeing and Lifestyle.

Summer: Privacy and Security and Copyright and Ownership.
