Whinneybanks Primary School

Design and Technology

At Whinney Banks we believe in fostering creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills through an inspiring Design and Technology curriculum. We aim to empower all pupils to become confident, innovative, and resilient learners who can explore and create in projects linked to the world around them.

Pupils develop practical skills in designing, making, and evaluating a wide range of products including their own and others. They learn to use a variety of tools and materials safely and confidently, working both independently and collaboratively towards their quality outcomes.

We aim to deepen pupils’ understanding of how design and technology influence the world around them, linking classroom learning to real-life contexts. They learn about significant individuals and events with a means to inspire their creative process and aspirations.

Teaching Design & Technology

At Whinney Banks, Design & Technology is taught through the following main strands:

  • Research & Design
  • Skills & Making
  • Evaluate
  • Inspiring D & T individuals/events
  • Technical knowledge

Design & Technology is taught through a main design project every year. Children have access to our well-resourced D &T studio where they can bring their design visions to life. Outcomes are  displayed around school and in our Gallery space.

Teaching Food Technology

We strive to inspire a love for cooking in our Whinney Banks pupils. We give children a sound knowledge of the importance of nutritious, healthy eating and encourage them to learn where their food comes from. Through the safe practice of basic culinary skills, we lay the foundations for individuals to feed themselves and others.

Children learn cooking skills through a main project each year where the learning is centred around the following main strands:

  • Nutrition & healthy eating
  • Taste & evaluate
  • Skills & techniques
  • Food sources & seasonality
  • Inspirational figures
