Whinneybanks Primary School

Art

At Whinney Banks we celebrate artistic expression and creativity through our high-quality art and design curriculum. Children develop practical skill through exploration of media, methods and techniques inspired by artists, designers and makers.

We provide children with the opportunity to experience, appreciate, evaluate and analyse a wide variety of creative works. Children are encouraged to learn and use a rich vocabulary of art, craft and design in order to become critical thinkers of their work and others in history. Art learning is celebrated in floor books, sketch books and is displayed across school, in our Art Gallery and within our community.

We passionately value the arts and see the potential that artistic knowledge, skill and expression can give to a person- we endeavour to nurture this in all our children.

Teaching of Art

At Whinney Banks, art is taught through the following main strands:

  • Elements of art (colour, pattern, texture, line, shape, form and space)
  • Mark-making & drawing
  • Colour & paint
  • 3D project/sculpture/craft
  • Artists, designers & makers in history

Art is taught across the year where children have regular access to our well-resourced art studio.

Enrichment Opportunities

In addition to our art & design curriculum, we strive to give our children a wealth of opportunities to experience art through working with expert artists, visits to galleries and sculptures (locally & nationally), extra-curricular clubs and competitions.
